About Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a popular procedure that is designed to combat a range of cosmetic issues related to aging eyelids. This versatile procedure can improve the upper eyelids as well as the lower eyelids, resulting in a youthful and refreshed appearance. In some cases, patients may choose to have surgery on both the lower and upper eyelids for the best result.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

Cosmetic improvement: Sagging eyelid skin can contribute to an aged appearance, but it can also make you look sad or angry, even when you feel fine. Blepharoplasty can lead to a more youthful and refreshed look.

Lasting results: Patients undergoing blepharoplasty can expect long-lasting results. While no cosmetic surgery can stop the natural process of aging, blepharoplasty patients can look forward to enjoying a more youthful eye appearance for many years to come.

Combining Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty

Patients who need extensive correction may benefit from combining upper and lower eyelid surgery, which allows for a more complete and balanced improvement of the eyelid area. This comprehensive approach also ensures that patients only have to endure one recovery period.

Dr. Bounds also has many blepharoplasty patients who have additional cosmetic goals. He understands that individuals desire results that may involve combining eyelid surgery with other procedures. . Dr. Bounds works with patients to craft a personalized treatment plan that addresses all of their cosmetic concerns.

It is often said that the eyes are the first thing others notice when looking at your face, and for good reason. Because this feature is so prominent, it can be frustrating to look in the mirror and see eyes that give away your age. Wrinkles, sagging skin, and dark circles all contribute to an older appearance, and many patients are eager to find a solution to this problem. Dr. Bounds of Bounds Plastic Surgery performs blepharoplasty to address this concern and help you restore a younger, more refreshed appearance.

Why Your Eyes Are Giving Away Your Age

Time can usher in many wonderful things, such as wisdom and experience. Unfortunately, it also comes with bothersome signs of aging, especially around the eyes. As we age, the production of collagen, which gives skin its youthful glow and plumpness, begins to slow down. It is common to notice fine lines, deeper wrinkles, and excess skin, all of which make you look older, tired, or angry. You may also start to see increased puffiness and bags around the eyes, which is due to the weakening of surrounding tissues as well as fluid retention. Although this is all a natural part of getting older, it doesn’t make these signs of aging any less troubling for patients.

A Solution for Youthful Eyes

Your solution to refreshed, youthful eyes is blepharoplasty by Dr. Bounds. Also known as eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty is designed to significantly improve the eyelids. The surgery can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids. Sometimes, both eyelids are treated for a full rejuvenation. You will work with Dr. Bounds to determine where you need the most improvement.

Upper blepharoplasty: An upper blepharoplasty is ideal for removing excess sagging eyelid skin, and the underlying muscle can also be repaired during the treatment. In some cases, the extent of eyelid sagging (ptosis) can cause vision to be obstructed, meaning it is more than just a cosmetic concern.

Lower blepharoplasty: The lower lids become thinner over time, and the soft undereye tissues begin to bulge. A lower blepharoplasty treats prominent undereye bags by removing fat and skin from the lower eyelids.

Combining Treatments

Dr. Bounds understands that many patients who inquire about blepharoplasty likely have other areas of concern, such as jowls, wrinkles near the mouth, and deep forehead creases. The truth is that aging does not affect just one area of the body, which is why Dr. Bounds may recommend combining cosmetic treatments for even better anti-aging results. You will have the opportunity during your consultation to share all of your cosmetic concerns with Dr. Bounds, who will then craft a treatment plan with your goals in mind.

A Younger Appearance in Virginia Beach

If you are ready to say goodbye to tired, older-looking eyes, it is time to consult with Dr. Bounds about eyelid surgery. To get started, contact our office today.

When it comes to getting older, the delicate eye area is often one of the first areas of the face to display aging signs. When the skin in this area begins to sag, the effect is a tired, aged appearance. Some patients feel that drooping eyelid skin makes them look angry, even when they feel fine. In extreme cases, lax upper eyelid skin can affect the ability to see clearly. Dr. Bounds knows that when patients visit him in search of solutions to aging eyes, they want to look and feel their best. This is why blepharoplasty is available at Bounds Plastic Surgery to rejuvenate the eye area.

Rejuvenated Eyes

A common reason patients consider blepharoplasty is to restore a younger eye appearance and get rid of stubborn lines and wrinkles. As time progresses, the skin on the eyelids loses elasticity and begins to sag. Blepharoplasty involves the careful removal of excess eyelid skin, fat, and tissue, leaving the eyes looking refreshed and younger with smooth contours. Some patients may even find they appear more “awake” after their blepharoplasty, which improves the overall look of the face.

Long-Lasting Results

Blepharoplasty addresses lines, wrinkles, and sagginess, leaving you with a youthful glow and smooth skin around the eyes. After this dramatic transformation, it is understandable that you will want to enjoy your beautiful results for as long as you can. One of the benefits of blepharoplasty is that the results can last for many years. While it cannot stop the natural process of aging, blepharoplasty can make it possible for you to appear younger and more rejuvenated for years to come.

Better Vision

Sagging skin can create deep folds within the upper eyelids, which can droop down and obstruct vision for some individuals. This can sometimes make it challenging for some patients to carry out daily activities, such as driving, cooking, and reading. Blepharoplasty reduces this sagging skin, allowing patients to experience the full range of vision without obstruction and improving their quality of life.

Blepharoplasty in Virginia Beach

Choosing the right surgeon for your blepharoplasty can make all the difference in your results. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bounds is ready to help you look younger and feel your absolute best by creating a blepharoplasty treatment plan in alignment with your cosmetic goals. If you are ready to experience the rejuvenating benefits of blepharoplasty, contact our office to schedule a consultation today.

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) consistently ranks as one of the most popular facial procedures among cosmetic surgery patients. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), more than 300,000 Americans undergo the blepharoplasty procedure every year. Reasons for undergoing eyelid surgery include a desire to look younger, eliminate a drooping eyelid appearance and tighten sagging skin around the eyes. It is popular with both women and men, especially those ranging in age from 40 to 69.

As a board-certified plastic surgeon performing blepharoplasty on patients who fit this profile, Dr. Kevin Bounds delivers outstanding results at Virginia Beach Plastic Surgery. However, some eyelid surgery patients request additional, non-surgical treatments in order to achieve more dramatic results.

What Eyelid Surgery Can Do

The blepharoplasty procedure can be incredibly versatile by achieving a variety of objectives. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. The procedure removes fat and excess skin in order to lift and shape the eyelids. The puffiness, bags and drooping that cause people to look older or perpetually “sad” can be eliminated. Patients often look many years younger, in addition to appearing more rested and rejuvenated. Those who have vision problems due to skin drooping into the line of sight are also able to see better.

When Eyelid Surgery Isn’t Enough

For those who undergo eyelid surgery to reverse the visible effects of aging around the eyes, there may be additional problems that require separate treatments. One of the most common problems is wrinkles around the eyes, whether those wrinkles are forehead creases, frown lines or “crow’s feet.” In these cases, many patients opt for non-surgical treatments in addition to the surgical procedure.

Non-Surgical Options with Eyelid Surgery

During your consultation for blepharoplasty, Dr. Bounds can assess which type of non-surgical treatment — a neurotoxin such as Botox or a dermal filler injectable like Juvederm, Restylane or Revance — would best complement the results of your eyelid surgery. The non-surgical option he recommends may depend on the location, size and depth of your lines and wrinkles, in addition to your degree of skin elasticity.

Neurotoxins

Botox and other neurotoxins work by blocking the chemical that causes muscle contractions. When injected at the site of a facial line or wrinkle, a neurotoxin paralyzes the muscle causing the wrinkle to prevent it from contracting and eliminate its visibility for about three to four months.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers use naturally occurring substances such as hyaluronic acid to fill in specific types of lines, creases and hollows in the skin while increasing collagen production. They are often recommended for deeper wrinkles and facial folds, with results lasting six to twelve months.

The eyes are the window to the soul, but drooping eyelids may obscure one’s beautiful gaze. The delicate tissues of the eyelids are vulnerable as you age, and many people struggle with sagging upper eyelids, under-eye bags and other issues that affect their overall look and may even impact their vision. Eyelid surgery (also called blepharoplasty or eyelid lift) drastically improves the upper and/or lower eyelids, providing a more youthful, wide-eyed appearance.

Dr. Kevin Bounds is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs eyelid lifts to help patients restore self-confidence and enhance their upper face. This procedure offers many long-lasting benefits, and most patients with eyelid concerns qualify for blepharoplasty.

Eyelid Lift Is A Top Procedure Year After Year

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 354,105 blepharoplasties (eyelid surgeries) were performed in 2019, making it the second most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States, just behind rhinoplasty. For the last decade, eyelid lift has ranked as a top procedure worldwide. From the U.S. to the U.K., East Asia and many other regions that follow plastic surgery trends, eyelid surgery was in the top five most commonly performed cosmetic procedures.

Eyelid Surgery Is Customizable For The Upper and Lower Eyelids

There are two types of blepharoplasty. The right one for you depends on your cosmetic concerns, the shape of your eyes and health concerns, such as drooping eyelids caused by weakened muscles that impair vision.

Upper Eyelid Surgery:Upper blepharoplasty is often performed to restore a full range of vision and address skin laxity and outstretched muscles in the upper eyelid. The procedure removes excess skin and fat in the eyelids, strengthens and repositions the underlying muscles and provides a more open and round eye appearance.

Lower Eyelid Surgery:Lower blepharoplasty removes wrinkles underneath the eyes and reduces under-eye bags and puffiness.

Understanding The Eyelid Surgery Procedure and Timeline

Dr. Bounds will discuss your medical history and cosmetic or medical concerns with your eyelids and determine the best approach to improve your eyelid appearance. Eyelid lift removes fat and excess skin from the upper and/or lower eyelids and lifts and contours of the eyelids for a younger appearance that restores the entire field of vision.

After eyelid lift surgery, patients can expect some bruising, swelling and incision lines that will improve as the tissues heal. Some patients experience dryness, eye itching and discomfort that improves with eye drops and other prescriptions during recovery. The full blepharoplasty results may not be revealed for some time because the delicate area needs time to heal and adjust to the new contour.

People in good health with realistic goals are often good candidates for eyelid surgery whether or not drooping eyelids impact their eyesight.

You may notice the effects of aging on your eyelids overnight or as a gradual change. The skin around your eyes is thin and often shows the wear and tear of getting older before other areas of your face, and a poor night’s sleep or stressful workday can exacerbate these signs of aging. Sagging upper eyelids and under-eye bags affect most people and are a common reason they seek upper and lower eyelid surgery.

Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Kevin Bounds, can rejuvenate your eyes’ appearance with blepharoplasty at Plastic Surgery of Virginia Beach.

When to Have Eyelid Surgery

Many patients want to move forward with eyelid surgery in preparation for a big event, such as a large family wedding or awards ceremony. Dr. Bounds reminds his Virginia Beach patients that life is a big event, and a well-rested, youthful appearance can give you a boost in confidence at any time. However, if your surgery is for an upcoming event, you will want to allow plenty of time for healing. Schedule your consultation with Dr. Bounds three or more months before the occasion to ensure you are ready to reveal your eyelid surgery results in time for the big day.

Eyelid surgery is often performed on patients in their early to mid-40s, and this is around the time signs of aging begin to appear or worsen around the eyes and other facial areas. Saggy eyelids or excess fat in the eyelid skin may be hereditary, so you may need the procedure earlier than others. Drooping upper eyelids can also be caused by lax forehead skin or sagging eyebrows, and eyelid surgery may be combined with a browlift to address these concerns for total facial rejuvenation.

The right time to have eyelid surgery is different for everyone. Still, you need to be in good overall health and have realistic expectations for your results and recovery.

How the Eyelids Change with Age

Your skin produces less of the components needed for youthful skin as you get older, including collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. The pockets of fat shrink and descend lower in the face, creating hollows in some areas and fat accumulation in others. The eyelids are no exception. The skin in the upper eyelids thins and loosens, and fatty tissue gathers around the eyelash line. You may develop under-eye bags due to natural aging, and these changes may be worsened by your genetics, medical conditions such as thyroid problems, allergies and a diet high in salt.

The lower eyelids are frequently the first area of the face to reveal signs of aging. When we are young, pockets of fat cushion our eye orbits; over time, this fat protrudes outward and the lower eyelid skin stretches. What used to be a smooth, even transition between the lower eyelid and upper cheek develops peaks and valleys. Bulges that resemble bags or half-moons can develop beneath the lower eyelids.

Dr. Kevin Bounds regularly sees patients who have a chronically tired or sad expression due to these age- and gravity-related changes. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Bounds is abundantly qualified to rejuvenate the lower eyelids and restore a youthful look.

How Is Lower Blepharoplasty Performed?

Lower blepharoplasty sculpts displaced fat and tightens loose skin of the lower eyelids. The goal is to eliminate bulges that obscure the transition between the lids and cheeks. Filling in the peaks and valleys also minimizes the appearance of any dark shadows beneath the lower lids cast by the bulges.

Lower blepharoplasty can be performed through incisions made beneath the lower lash line or placed on the inside of the lower eyelids. In both cases, scarring is well concealed.

If you are bothered by excess loose skin and/or puffiness around your lower eyelids, blepharoplasty with Dr. Bounds may be a good option. Known for his attention to detail and precise surgical techniques, Dr. Bounds works meticulously to avoid over- or under-correcting the eyes.

Dr. Bounds also ensures that surgery is a comfortable experience for every patient. It is natural to feel protective of your sensitive eyes and concerned about potential pain during surgery. Dr. Bounds will determine an appropriate pain management plan to reflect your unique needs and goals.

Local Anesthesia vs. General Anesthesia: Which Is Better?

Lower blepharoplasty can be performed with local anesthesia or general anesthesia.

With local anesthesia, many patients take a sedative medication prior to the procedure to achieve a relaxed, calm state of mind. The local anesthesia is administered directly underneath the eyelid skin using a tiny needle. Patients feel no pain or discomfort throughout the procedure, with the numbing effects usually lasting about an hour.

With general anesthesia, patients are asleep and completely unaware of the procedure. Dr. Bounds works with a board-certified anesthesiologist to administer the medication and monitor the patient throughout the procedure.

The anesthesia option that is right for you depends on factors such as your health, previous anesthesia experiences and personal preferences.

Blepharoplasty, or eye lift, is an effective way to reduce bagginess from lower eyelids, while removing drooping skin from upper eyelids. It tightens the skin surrounding the eyes and eliminates excess fat, changing a once-tired expression into a supple, youthful look.

Trusted Virginia Beach plastic surgeon Dr. Kevin Bounds is skilled in performing blepharoplasty with local anesthesia, a convenient in-office procedure that can reverse or reduce the signs of aging near the eyes.

Permanent Lift

Blepharoplasty is a permanent solution for weary eyes and worn-out expressions. Once fat is removed during blepharoplasty, it will never come back. The procedure does not freeze time, however; you will experience a normal loosening of skin over the next 10 or 20 years. Eye lift resets the clock, so your natural aging process begins again with much younger-looking skin.

Because blepharoplasty is meant to last years, it is important that a surgeon refrain from removing too much skin. Dr. Bounds favors a conservative approach, removing an amount that is sufficient to give you a relaxed, optimistic look.

Myriad Options

Although the results of blepharoplasty can be remarkable, patients often choose other effective options. Among them is brow lift. When your primary concern is loose skin and an accumulation of fat in the upper and lower eyelids, blepharoplasty is often the best choice. If you are satisfied with the shape and placement of your eyebrow, blepharoplasty may be all you need. Brow lift may be a better choice when your brow is within the eye socket, has lost its natural shape, or you have a pocket of fat or loose skin that involves more than just the eyelid.

Blood vessels and pigment can be directly targeted with laser treatment, as well. Laser is also very effective in treating so-called “crepey” skin under the eyes. In some cases, Botox or Dysport can be a preferred way to relax muscles that are causing wrinkles and volume displacement near the eyes.
