What You Need to Know Before Your Eyelid Lift

The eyes are the window to the soul, but drooping eyelids may obscure one’s beautiful gaze. The delicate tissues of the eyelids are vulnerable as you age, and many people struggle with sagging upper eyelids, under-eye bags and other issues that affect their overall look and may even impact their vision. Eyelid surgery (also called blepharoplasty or eyelid lift) drastically improves the upper and/or lower eyelids, providing a more youthful, wide-eyed appearance.

Dr. Kevin Bounds is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs eyelid lifts to help patients restore self-confidence and enhance their upper face. This procedure offers many long-lasting benefits, and most patients with eyelid concerns qualify for blepharoplasty.

Eyelid Lift Is A Top Procedure Year After Year

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 354,105 blepharoplasties (eyelid surgeries) were performed in 2019, making it the second most popular cosmetic procedure in the United States, just behind rhinoplasty. For the last decade, eyelid lift has ranked as a top procedure worldwide. From the U.S. to the U.K., East Asia and many other regions that follow plastic surgery trends, eyelid surgery was in the top five most commonly performed cosmetic procedures.

Eyelid Surgery Is Customizable For The Upper and Lower Eyelids

There are two types of blepharoplasty. The right one for you depends on your cosmetic concerns, the shape of your eyes and health concerns, such as drooping eyelids caused by weakened muscles that impair vision.

  1. Upper Eyelid Surgery:Upper blepharoplasty is often performed to restore a full range of vision and address skin laxity and outstretched muscles in the upper eyelid. The procedure removes excess skin and fat in the eyelids, strengthens and repositions the underlying muscles and provides a more open and round eye appearance.
  2. Lower Eyelid Surgery:Lower blepharoplasty removes wrinkles underneath the eyes and reduces under-eye bags and puffiness.

Understanding The Eyelid Surgery Procedure and Timeline

Dr. Bounds will discuss your medical history and cosmetic or medical concerns with your eyelids and determine the best approach to improve your eyelid appearance. Eyelid lift removes fat and excess skin from the upper and/or lower eyelids and lifts and contours of the eyelids for a younger appearance that restores the entire field of vision.

After eyelid lift surgery, patients can expect some bruising, swelling and incision lines that will improve as the tissues heal. Some patients experience dryness, eye itching and discomfort that improves with eye drops and other prescriptions during recovery. The full blepharoplasty results may not be revealed for some time because the delicate area needs time to heal and adjust to the new contour.

People in good health with realistic goals are often good candidates for eyelid surgery whether or not drooping eyelids impact their eyesight.
