You want to know you’re in skilled, experienced hands when you choose to improve an aspect of your face or body with plastic surgery. Dr. Kevin Bounds is behind the mask at Plastic Surgery of Virginia Beach, where he has fostered the love and trust of patients for more than 30 years.

Building A Career in Medicine

Dr. Bounds attended Duke University for his undergraduate degree before earning his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia but moved south for his internship at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He completed his residencies in general and plastic surgery at Emory University affiliated hospitals and is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is grateful for the outstanding education and training he’s received throughout his career.

Founding Plastic Surgery of Virginia Beach

Dr. Bounds founded Plastic Surgery of Virginia Beach in 1990. He chose this area because of his love for the water when he was growing up. His practice offers a broad spectrum of plastic surgery.

His plastic surgery and nonsurgical cosmetic approaches for the face, breasts and body evolved from the many years he spent performing cancer and trauma surgeries. Dr. Bounds enjoys helping patients achieve their face and body goals through surgery or nonsurgical treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers. Unlike many surgeons who restrict their services to surgery, he is happy to enhance your appearance with or without the use of a scalpel.

Enjoying Life Outside the Office

Many of Dr. Bounds patients know he likes singing in and out of the office. One of his many loves is the beautiful Virginia waters, where he often spends time with a fishing rod or taking in the scenery. Time with family and friends on the beach or in Atlanta visiting his granddaughter brings him great joy, as do playing tennis and traveling with his wife.

Dr. Kevin Bounds continues to work hard for his patients and is grateful for their support and the kind reviews he has received over the years.

From your initial consultation to your final follow-up appointment, you want to know that you are in excellent hands in a place where patient safety is paramount. Plastic surgeries are invasive procedures that must be performed by a skilled, experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon at an accredited surgical facility. Dr. Kevin Bounds is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and performs procedures at our AAAASF accredited surgical facility in Virginia Beach.

What Does “Accredited” Mean for Surgical Facilities?

In 1980, the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) was founded to improve the standards of outpatient facilities around the world, making health care quality a top priority. This entity is seen as the “Gold Standard in Accreditation” to provide public assurance that all steps are taken to ensure patient safety. Since its inception, the AAAASF has accredited thousands of facilities worldwide, holding outpatient centers to the same standards as hospitals.

Our Plastic Surgery of Virginia Beach surgical facility has met the stringent standards required by the AAAASF, including:

The surgical facility director meets the strict requirements necessary to run the center safely and effectively.

The surgical staff has the certifications and credentials necessary to perform or aid in procedures such as board certifications and hospital privileges.

The center passes a rigorous survey performed by a qualified AAAASF surveyor, ensuring a safe, clean surgical environment and the required staff for procedures, such as anesthesia professionals.

The facility continues to comply with the AAAASF accreditation standards, which involves an annual self-survey and on-site survey after three years.

Plastic surgeons should only perform procedures at an accredited outpatient facility or in a hospital with operating privileges. When you see the AAAASF accreditation certificate proudly displayed, you can trust that our surgical facility meets 100% of the strict requirements and is devoted to patient safety and satisfaction.

Why Choose Plastic Surgery of Virginia Beach

In addition to being ABPS-certified, Dr. Bounds is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Virginia Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Medical Society of Virginia. He is devoted to providing safe and effective plastic surgeries and medical spa treatments to our patients.

Plastic Surgery of Virginia Beach offers a welcoming environment and comfortable setting for your plastic surgery. Dr. Bounds has more than 25 years of experience providing excellent results in a convenient outpatient setting.

If you are interested in improving an aspect of your appearance through plastic surgery or cosmetic treatments, contact Dr. Bounds today to schedule your consultation.

Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

Confirming that your surgeon has certification with this board demonstrates he has had the type of training appropriate to your goals. Those with this certification have met very demanding training requirements and have successfully passed a very strict examination wherein their fund of knowledge is evaluated as are their ethics for a safe and effective approach to cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Are you a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) as well as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)?

Both societies require that the member has completed at least six years of surgical training following medical school and a plastic surgery residency and passed oral and written exams. Members are required to complete yearly continuing medical education and perform all surgeries in an accredited facility. The ASAPS focuses on aesthetic or cosmetic procedures which are a different branch of plastic surgery and shows demonstrates that your surgeon has the expertise to perform cosmetic procedures.

Is the surgical facility where I’m having my surgery accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency?

Two accreditations you may see which show the surgical facility has met rigorous standards for your safety are AAAASF and AAHC.

Am I a good candidate for this procedure?

During your consultation an in depth discussion of your goals is important. You want to know that the surgical procedure will help you achieve your goals without comprising your well-being.

Are Before and After Photos of the surgeon’s own patients’ available to view?

Looking at photos of other patients will help you determine if your goals will be met by the procedures you are considering. Being able to see actual results from the surgeon’s own patients will help you recognize what the surgery can and cannot do for your figure.

What are the risks and complications of the procedure I am considering and what will be important to my recovery.

Your surgeon can give you a general idea of the risk of a procedure and after reviewing your health history more specific information can be provided. You might not be a good candidate for a procedure if you have medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, smoke or have other health concerns.

A good idea of the recovery process, restrictions and preparing for the help you will need after surgery is important. You should get information about the time you will need to take off from work, help you might need with children, an idea of physical limitations which might affect your job duties and regular exercise routine. The more questions you ask, the greater your knowledge for a complete post-operative care plan.

Why would I choose Dr. Kevin Bounds and Plastic Surgery of Virginia Beach?

We want the best for our patients. Cosmetic surgery is a choice not a necessity. It should be made with good communication between the surgeon and patient with the focus on the patient as a whole, not just the procedure being offered. We would like to think our relationship with our patients, demonstrated by their reviews of our practice and ongoing relationship with us shows we have the surgeon who will provide you with excellent care.

What is a Tummy tuck?

The Tummy tuck, also known as an Abdominoplasty is a procedure which removes, excess fat and skin and usually tightens weakened muscles for a smoother and firmer stomach.

Many of us work hard to exercise and eat well to build a healthy attractive body. Even with the best efforts this may not be achieved. Various factors can contribute to an abdomen that is loose, sagging and protruding. Aging, pregnancy, fluctuations in weight and heredity can be reasons an individual’s abdomen is unattractive. Tummy tuck surgery may be an option to improve your figure.

What can a tummy tuck do for your figure?

Realistic goals are important. There are some things a tummy tuck cannot correct. It is not a substitute for weight loss or exercise. Although generally results of a tummy tuck are considered permanent, significant changes in weight and pregnancy may diminish the positive changes initially seen. A tummy tuck cannot correct stretch marks, although they may be improved if they are located in areas where the skin will be removed. You would be considered a good candidate for the procedure if you area: healthy and at a stable weight, a non-smoker, and have realistic expectations of the changes the surgery will produce.

Are there different types of Tummy Tucks?

A complete abdominoplasty is a procedure during which the surgeon will make an incision from hipbone to hipbone and contour the skin, tissue and muscle as needed. This surgery will involve moving your belly button and placing drainage tubes under your skin for a few days.

A partial or mini-tuck may be an option if your fat deposits are located below your navel and muscle tightening is not necessary. During this procedure your belly button is not moved and recovery is less restrictive. Your plastic surgeon will offer the least invasive option that will provide the results you are seeking.

What type of physician do I talk to about a Tummy Tuck?

A Plastic Surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery should be your choice. Membership in the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons also indicates experience in the field of cosmetic plastic surgery. Check to see that the Plastic Surgeon has hospital privileges to perform a tummy tuck.

Where will my Tummy Tuck be performed?

Many plastic surgeons have their own surgical facility. Check to see that the facility is licensed by a nationally recognized accrediting agency.

During my consultation what will I find out?

The Plastic Surgeon will meet with you and listen to your goals and desires. He will evaluate your health and any pre-existing health conditions or risks factors, so you should be very candid about your lifestyle and habits. You will have a physical examination to determine if you are a good candidate for the tuck procedure. Your plastic surgeon will discuss your options and recommend an appropriate course of treatment. You should be able to review pre- and post-operative photographs of the surgeon’s patients. Your doctor will give you information on your recovery and the help you will need following your surgery. He will review risks and complications associated with the procedure. A quote for the procedure will given.

How do I make my final decision?

As with all cosmetic procedures, the tummy tuck is not a medical necessity, it is a choice. You should feel comfortable with your surgeon and his staff as you are all working together for your best outcome.

Check out our Tummy Tuck Before and After Photos and schedule your tummy tuck consultation today!

Breast Augmentation is one procedure women often choose to enhance their figure as it increases or restores breast size using saline or gel implants. Some of the reasons you might be considering an augmentation are:

You want a better proportioned or more attractive figure. You believe your breasts are too small and/or you feel self-conscious wearing a bathing suit or low cut tops.

You want your clothes to fit better. Clothes that fit your hips are too large at your bust-line.

When pregnancy, weight loss or aging has negatively affected the size and shape of your breast. Your breasts have become smaller or less firm after having children or losing weight.

To achieve symmetry in your breast if they are different sizes.

What are your choices when considering Breast Augmentation?

One of the most important choices you make in having a breast augmentation procedure is who is to be your plastic surgeon. Consider the asking the following questions when making your selection, and the answers should all be YES!

Are you trained specifically in the field of plastic surgery?

Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

Do you have hospital privileges to perform a breast augmentation?

Is the office based surgical facility accredited by a national accrediting agency.

Are you a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons?

Other questions you should be able to have answered are:

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation or breast enlargement?

Where will my procedure be performed?

What are my implant choices and where will the incisions be?

Can I review before and after photos of the surgeon’s own patients to review results and see what might be appropriate for me?

Turn back the clock this fall, Look like a younger version of yourself with a Facelift

Five Facelift Facts

It’s not just celebrities who choose to have a facelift.

Over 200,000 facial procedures were performed last year with the number growing each year. Facelifts are a choice for people who have looked in their mirror and found time, gravity and heredity have changed their face so that they don’t look like themselves any more.

Your choice of plastic surgeon is key.

The experience of your plastic surgeon is important. The choice of a skilled Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who understands your facial structure and skin can produce results which make you look like your younger self. Your surgeon’s experience in the practice of aesthetic plastic surgery will insure you look refreshed not fake.

A facelift can offer results that last for years.

If you have tried non-surgical treatments, like Botox® and fillers, and want a longer lasting results, then a facelift may be right for you. Consult with the Plastic Surgeon who offers your dermal filler treatments about a facelift. A facelift can rejuvenate your appearance, taking years off your face without looking overdone.

There is no one way to perform a facelift.

Age presents differently on different faces so there are many ways to address the aging face. During the consultation your Plastic Surgeon can review surgical techniques which would address your individual concerns and help you look like a younger version of yourself not a different person. There are several methods used by plastic surgeons to perform a good facelift and skill and experience are important for a great result.

What you do is important to your results as well.

If you are in good health and want to look as young and happy on the outside as you feel inside, a facelift may be a great choice. In saying this, you must be prepared to invest not just money but your time and effort in preparing for and recovering from your facelift. Listen to your plastic surgeon’s recommendations regarding your health and lifestyle leading up to and following your facelift procedure.

During tummy tuck surgery, clinically known as abdominoplasty, a plastic surgeon removes loose skin, tightens the abdominal muscles, and eliminates stubborn deposits of fat.

Are there different kinds?

There are several variations of tummy tuck surgery, each designed to target certain areas of the body or specific issues. An experienced plastic surgeon can thoroughly explain these options and help patients arrive at a treatment plan that will gives them natural results and an improved sense of confidence.

Who is considered a ‘good candidate’?

When considering the tummy tuck procedure, it is important that the candidate is in good health, has loose or droopy skin on the abdomen and has healthy expectations for after the surgery. This means committing to a healthy diet and an exercise regimen before and after the body sculpting procedure.

Tummy Tucking is NOT a miracle procedure.

People hear about tummy tucking and they see the before and after pictures which makes them believe that it is a miracle procedure. This is completely wrong. Tummy tucks do vastly improve one’s body and figure but this plastic surgery procedure is only half of the process. For you to keep the new body figure, you must stay active and healthy.

Post-pregnancy

Because of the way that pregnancy stretches the skin and separates the abdominal muscles, diet and exercise can be inadequate in tightening the abdominal area after childbirth. Tummy tuck surgery restores the pre-pregnancy figure, sometimes incorporating liposuction to remove the stubborn excess fat that can remain after childbirth.

Massive weight loss

People who have lost a significant amount of weight may enjoy much improved health, but the weight loss can also have undesirable aesthetic effects. Plastic surgery procedures such as a tummy tuck can create a physique that better reflects the efforts someone has made to lose weight.

Cost

Because tummy tucks are completely individualized treatments, it is impossible to provide a single total that applies across the board. The Abdominoplasty cost varies according to several factors, and it can range in price from $4500 for a Mini-Tuck to $12,000 for a full abdominoplasty.

Once the procedure is complete, it is important to take care of your body during the recovery process. A smooth recovery will lead to a happier and healthier overall outcome. Here are some tips to consider while recovering from a breast lift.

Managing Discomfort

Many women are anxious about the amount of discomfort they might experience after breast enhancement surgery. Fortunately, most are pleasantly surprised that the pain level is not as high as they expect and easily manageable with oral pain medication. To ensure your pain remains manageable, make arrangements to rest and recuperate the first few days by enlisting the help and support of a relative or close friend. The more you can relax in those early days, the better you are likely to feel overall.

Sleeping and Bathing

Sleeping after breast lift surgery should be done on your back or possibly your side. Avoid sleeping on your stomach during the first week or two to prevent additional discomfort and possible interference with the healing process. You may also find it is difficult to raise your hands above your head to wash your hair for the first few days. Be patient, you will be back to your normal bathing routine quicker than you think.

Supporting Healthy Scar Healing

It is important to treat your incisions with extra care in the days following plastic surgery to ensure proper incision healing and minimal scarring. Surgical dressings applied to the area need to be kept clean and dry. At your first appointment after surgery, those dressings will be removed and you will be given special post-operative garments to wear for a number of weeks.

Keep your incisions out of direct sunlight while they are healing and do not smoke during the recovery process to ensure the best results. Topical products may also be recommended to reduce the amount of visible scarring you experience after your surgery.

Wearing Post-Surgical Garments

When your dressings are removed, you will be given a special support bra that ensures healthy blood flow and proper healing of the area. It is important to wear this garment as instructed by Dr. Bounds. Once you are finished with the support garment, you can switch to your comfortable bras. Avoid underwire bras until Dr. Bounds tells you it is safe to begin wearing them again.

Are You a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

When thinking about undergoing a procedure like Liposuction, it is best to understand what type of body sculpting concerns can be addressed with liposuction and what to expect from the procedure. The best candidates for liposuction, whether male or female, have localized deposits of fat in their abdomen, arms, thighs and/or neck. These pockets of fat are often resistant to the effects of even the best diet and exercise regimens, and may be the result of genetics. In addition, facial liposuction is often used to address chubby cheeks or jowls.

Be Active!

Yes, it is important to be an active person when considering liposuction. Ideally, liposuction candidates should be physically fit and not more than 20 pounds overweight. If you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight, or even gain weight (due to pregnancy, for example), now is not the time to undergo liposuction. Liposuction results are permanent as long as your weight remains stable.

Elasticity

Yes, skin elasticity is an important and crucial factor of liposuction. For the best results, the skin must shrink following the procedure. Many people lose skin elasticity with age, which can compromise the results of liposuction so it may be better to receive this procedure when you are younger rather than older. However, if your skin quality remains elastic, age is no deterrent for liposuction.

The Bottom Line

As with other plastic surgery procedures, good health is essential for liposuction candidates. If you have any medical problems such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes or circulatory problems, your vulnerability to liposuction risks increases. It is important to discuss any medical issues with your doctor beforehand to fully understand the procedure and the process. If it is determined that you are a good candidate for the liposuction procedure you will be happy with the improvement in your physique.

Most people don’t even know that there are two different types of the procedure “facelift”. If you are considering undergoing a procedure like this, it is important to understand and know your options since they vary in price and intensity.

Mini Facelift

What is it?

Mini facelift surgery is the most common type of facelift surgery performed today. It addresses wrinkles and sagging skin on the lower third of the face using small incisions placed around the ears. It restores definition to the chin by removing excess tissue and artfully tightening remaining tissue. A skilled plastic surgeon such as Dr. Kevin Bounds can tailor a mini facelift procedure to give you a youthful, more refreshed appearance that accentuates your natural beauty and boosts your confidence.

Who is it for?

Mini facelift surgery appeals to many men and women because it can address some of the most prominent signs of aging. For example, some people experience hormonal changes, or are genetically predisposed to losing definition in their jaw. Many patients turn to mini facelift surgery to restore this definition.

Facelift

What is it?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a procedure in facial surgery that aims to give a more youthful appearance to the face. It reshapes the lower half of the face by removing excess facial skin.

Rhytidectomy can tighten loose, hanging skin around the jaw line, also known as “jowls.” It can also remove deep creases around the mouth and nose, and excess, hanging skin and fat under the chin and in the neck. The procedure can also tighten the underlying tissues, and it may be combined with plastic surgery to enhance the forehead, cheeks, brows, and eyelids.

Who is it for?

Roughly 100,000 women a year receive this procedure in the U.S. alone while only 30,000 men undergo a facelift. Even though there is a stigma, this procedure is for both sexes. This procedure targets areas on the face to give the patient a more rejuvenated look. If you are looking to look younger and more fruitful, this may be the procedure for you.
