Dr. Bounds attended Duke University for his undergraduate degree before earning his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia but moved south for his internship at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He completed his residencies in general and plastic surgery at Emory University affiliated hospitals and is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is grateful for the outstanding education and training he’s received throughout his career.

Founding Plastic Surgery of Virginia Beach

Dr. Bounds founded Plastic Surgery of Virginia Beach in 1990. He chose this area because of his love for the water when he was growing up. His practice offers a broad  spectrum of plastic surgery.

His plastic surgery and nonsurgical cosmetic approaches for the face, breasts and body evolved from the many years he spent performing cancer and trauma surgeries. Dr. Bounds enjoys helping patients achieve their face and body goals through surgery or nonsurgical treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers. Unlike many surgeons who restrict their services to surgery, he is happy to enhance your appearance with or without the use of a scalpel.

Enjoying Life Outside the Office

Many of Dr. Bounds patients know he likes singing in and out of the office. One of his many loves is the beautiful Virginia waters, where he often spends time with a fishing rod or taking in the scenery. Time with family and friends on the beach or in Atlanta visiting his granddaughter brings him great joy, as do playing tennis and traveling with his wife.

Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

Confirming that your surgeon has certification with this board demonstrates he has had the type of training appropriate to your goals. Those with this certification have met very demanding training requirements and have successfully passed a very strict examination wherein their fund of knowledge is evaluated as are their ethics for a safe and effective approach to cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Are you a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) as well as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)?

Both societies require that the member has completed at least six years of surgical training following medical school and a plastic surgery residency and passed oral and written exams. Members are required to complete yearly continuing medical education and perform all surgeries in an accredited facility. What is a Tummy tuck?

The Tummy tuck, also known as an Abdominoplasty is a procedure which removes, excess fat and skin and usually tightens weakened muscles for a   smoother and firmer stomach.

Many of us work hard to exercise and eat well to build a healthy attractive body.  Even with the best efforts this may not be achieved. Various factors can contribute to an abdomen that is loose, sagging and protruding.  Aging, pregnancy, fluctuations in weight and heredity can be reasons an individual’s abdomen is unattractive. Tummy tuck surgery may be an option to improve your figure.

What can a tummy tuck do for your figure?

Realistic goals are important. There are some things a tummy tuck cannot correct.  It is not a substitute for weight loss or exercise. Although generally results of a tummy tuck are considered permanent, significant changes in weight and pregnancy may diminish the positive changes initially seen.  A tummy tuck cannot correct stretch marks, although they may be improved if they are located in areas where the skin will be removed.  You would be considered a good candidate for the procedure if you area: healthy and at a stable weight, a non-smoker, and have realistic expectations of the changes the surgery will produce.

Are there different types of Tummy Tucks?

A complete abdominoplasty is a procedure during which the surgeon will make an incision from hipbone to hipbone and contour the skin, tissue and muscle as needed. This surgery will involve moving your belly button and placing drainage tubes under your skin for a few days.

A partial or mini-tuck may be an option if your fat deposits are located below your navel and muscle tightening is not necessary. During this procedure your belly button is not moved and recovery is less restrictive.  Your plastic surgeon will offer the least invasive option that will provide the results you are seeking.

Managing Discomfort

Many women are anxious about the amount of discomfort they might experience after breast enhancement surgery. Fortunately, most are pleasantly surprised that the pain level is not as high as they expect and easily manageable with oral pain medication. To ensure your pain remains manageable, make arrangements to rest and recuperate the first few days by enlisting the help and support of a relative or close friend. The more you can relax in those early days, the better you are likely to feel overall.

Sleeping and Bathing

Sleeping after breast lift surgery should be done on your back or possibly your side. Avoid sleeping on your stomach during the first week or two to prevent additional discomfort and possible interference with the healing process. You may also find it is difficult to raise your hands above your head to wash your hair for the first few days. Be patient, you will be back to your normal bathing routine quicker than you think.

Supporting Healthy Scar Healing

It is important to treat your incisions with extra care in the days following plastic surgery to ensure proper incision healing and minimal scarring. Surgical dressings applied to the area need to be kept clean and dry.  At your first appointment after surgery, those dressings will be removed and you will be given special post-operative garments to wear for a number of weeks.

Keep your incisions out of direct sunlight while they are healing and do not smoke during the recovery process to ensure the best results. Topical products may also be recommended to reduce the amount of visible scarring you experience after your surgery.

Wearing Post-Surgical Garments

When your dressings are removed, you will be given a special support bra that ensures healthy blood flow and proper healing of the area. It is important to wear this garment as instructed by Dr. Bounds. Once you are finished with the support garment, you can switch to your comfortable bras. Avoid underwire bras until Dr. Bounds tells you it is safe to begin wearing them again.

Yes, it is important to be an active person when considering liposuction. Ideally, liposuction candidates should be physically fit and not more than 20 pounds overweight. If you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight, or even gain weight (due to pregnancy, for example), now is not the time to undergo liposuction. Liposuction results are permanent as long as your weight remains stable.

Yes, skin elasticity is an important and crucial factor of liposuction. For the best results, the skin must shrink following the procedure.
