What is Male Blepharoplasty?
Droopy and puffy eyelids can make you look tired, grumpy, and older. Even worse, the aging process can even affect the eyelids so much that you experience vision impairment. The blepharoplasty procedure targets excess tissue and fat in the eyelid to tighten the muscles, ligaments, and skin for a more youthful appearance. The result is a tighter, more awake upper eye area with improved vision capabilities.

Why Do People Undergo Male Eyelid Surgery?
Typically, people choose to undergo eyelid surgery for one of two reasons: They are unhappy with how the aging process has made their eyelids look or they are experiencing vision loss due to sagging eyelids. Whether you’re considering a blepharoplasty due to cosmetic or medical reasons, both permit strong candidacy for this procedure. Eyelid surgery is also often performed in conjunction with other surgical procedures, if you wish to correct more than just the eyelids at one time.
Who is a Candidate for Male Eyelid Surgery?
People who are over the age of 30 and have baggy or droopy eyelids are likely a strong candidate for the procedure. If Dr. Bounds thinks that the procedure should be combined with another treatment option, such as a lower lid surgery, he will make such recommendations. You will discuss your treatment plan and goals for the eyelid surgery with Dr. Bounds at your consultation.
How is Male Eyelid Surgery Performed?
Blepharoplasty is performed using local or general anesthesia depending upon your treatment plan. The procedure itself will also vary depending if both the upper and lower eyelids are being treated. Accordingly, Dr. Bounds will make tiny incisions along the natural folds of your eyelid. Using these incisions to access underlying tissue, Dr. Bounds will then separate the skin from the fatty tissue and remove any excess to recontour the lids. Once the excess skin and tissue are removed, Dr. Bounds will close the incisions.
How Much Does Male Eyelid Surgery Cost in Virginia Beach, VA?
The cost of your eyelid surgery will depend on the scope of your treatment. Dr. Bounds will discuss the cost for your eyelid surgery procedure at your consultation, where he will also develop your individualized treatment plan. For your convenience, we offer CareCredit® and APLPHAEON financing on all procedures. For more information, visit our patient financing page.
What Is the Difference Between Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty?
The two types of eyelid surgery are upper and lower blepharoplasty. Upper blepharoplasty is a surgery that focuses on the drooping upper eyelids. By tightening muscles and removing excess fat and skin just above the eye, Dr. Bounds can help your eyes to open more fully, minimizing the “hooding” effect that comes with age.
Lower blepharoplasty focuses on the area just beneath the eyes where dark circles and hollows can make you look older and perpetually tired. By removing and/or repositioning fat and tissue to create a smoother undereye area, Dr. Bounds refreshes and rejuvenates your appearance.
What is Recovery from Male Blepharoplasty Like?
Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure, which means that you will recover in the comfort of your own home. In the first few days, avoid activities like reading or watching TV that can tire your eyes. Prioritize rest and relaxation, taking pain medication as necessary to relieve any lingering discomfort. Swelling and bruising should subside in the weeks that follow. Most patients feel and look well enough to return to work after 7-10 days. Scars fade from visibility over time, and they can be difficult to spot anyway since the incisions are placed along the natural folds of the eye.
How Long Do Male Blepharoplasty Results Last?
Since upper eyelid surgery cannot permanently stop the aging process, after about a decade, you may notice that your upper lids will start to sag again. With lower blepharoplasty, the results tend to last indefinitely. Many patients see the benefits of having smoother undereye skin for the rest of their lives, with very few having a cosmetic need to repeat the surgery in the future.
How Is Eyelid Surgery for Men Different Than It Is for Women?
In most respects, blepharoplasty is the same for male and female patients. However, many plastic surgeons are primarily accustomed to performing surgery on women. That means they may utilize techniques that slightly “feminize” the face — which would not be appealing to many men.
Having operated on many men, Dr. Bounds has a nuanced understanding of male facial contours. He understands that men want to maintain a more rugged appearance. To maintain rugged features, he avoids pulling skin and tissues too tightly.
For both sexes, Dr. Bounds prioritizes creating natural-looking results. The point is not to change the way you look, but rather to help you look like you did several years prior.
