What is Botox®?

Introduced and approved for use nearly 25 years ago, the popularity of Botox® for non-invasive cosmetic procedures has soared since it was approved by the FDA for treating frown lines and wrinkles.

How Botox® Works
Botox® works quite simply by blocking the chemical in our bodies that causes muscle contractions. This essentially paralyzes the muscles and keeps them from contracting, resulting in the reduced appearance of skin lines and wrinkles. Most patients begin to notice the results within a few days and the results can last for four to six months.
How is Botox® Administered?
Dr. Bounds will begin the procedure by determining the most advantageous injection sites based on your individual needs. Botox® is injected at the targeted sites and the procedure is complete. The entire treatment usually takes less than 20 minutes.
Recovery after Botox®
Botox® treatment is quick, relatively painless and requires no recovery period. Some patients experience minor headaches and may experience light flu-like symptoms, minor redness or discomfort at the injection site. You may resume your normal activities right away, but Dr. Bounds may recommend that you limit your sun exposure for a few days.
Is Botox® safe?
When used correctly by a properly trained specialist, Botox® is one of the safest and most effective treatments for reducing the appearance of fine facial lines, crows feet and wrinkles. Beware of spas and physicians who are not trained in the use of Botox®, and by all means, avoid “Botox® parties”.
How Much Does Botox® Cost in Virginia Beach?
The cost for Botox® treatment is based on the number of units injected per area treated. Different areas of the face require different numbers of units of Botox® to achieve the desired results. We will determine your exact cost at your consultation. On all procedures, we are proud to offer CareCredit® and ALPHAEON financing to our clients whom wish to use convenient monthly plans. Botox FAQs
How is Botox Different from Dermal Fillers?
Neuromodulator injectables such as Botox work differently than dermal fillers. While fillers “fill in” areas of the face that have lost volume due to age to smooth lines and wrinkles, Botox targets the reason specific signs of aging form in the skin. Botox is made with a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin type A. This substance immobilizes or freezes muscle movement in specific areas of the face that lead to lines and wrinkles along your forehead, between your brows and on the sides of your eyes. Smiling, squinting and frowning can cause forehead lines, “crow’s feet” and glabellar lines (11’s between the brows).
In contrast, dermal fillers are often made with hyaluronic acid, which gives the skin a fuller, more youthful appearance by restoring volume.
Will My Results Look Natural?
Dr. Bounds offers soft, natural-looking results that provide a younger look and eliminate the tired or angry appearance sometimes caused by facial wrinkles and creases. Some patients worry about the “frozen” look once associated with Botox. However, this injectable is skillfully administered by Dr. Bounds to smooth moderate to severe lines and wrinkles for natural results that do not look “overdone.”
What is “Brotox?”
Brotox is the nickname for Botox treatments for men, who account for an increasing number of patients. This injectable is the most requested non-surgical cosmetic treatment among men. Women are not the only ones interested in reducing pesky lines and wrinkles.
What is the Ideal Age for Botox?
The average Botox patient is in their early- to mid-thirties and interested in reducing signs of aging, though there is no age limit. Men and women in their golden years regularly have Botox treatments as well. Smoothing the forehead, brow and outer eye areas earlier in life may prevent the formation of deeper wrinkles, which are more challenging to treat. Some people seek Botox treatment to prevent lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place. Dr. Bounds can help you determine if Botox is right for you and your age group during your consultation.
How Long Is a Botox Treatment?
Dr. Bounds may perform your Botox treatment immediately following your consultation or schedule for a later date. The Botox process is typically fast, taking as little as 20 minutes, and you may be able to have Botox during your lunch break.
What Areas of the Face are Treated with Botox?
Botox is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for three cosmetic uses: Horizontal forehead lines, vertical glabellar lines between the eyebrows and crow’s feet or smile lines found on the outer edges of your eyes. This neuromodulator is also approved for various medical conditions such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), urinary incontinence, chronic migraine, blepharospasm (eyelid twitching) and strabismus (crossed eyes).
How Long Will Botox Results Last?
Botox results last three months or longer, with some participants experiencing reduced lines and wrinkles for up to five months. How long your anti-aging results last after Botox depends on the treated area and dosage, but you can maintain them with continued treatments.
